In this module, you will learn about the twenty-three Pinyin initials with their finals. There are twenty-one initials and two special initials available in the Chinese Pinyin system.  You will learn how to pronounce these initials, practice with some examples in both Chinese words and their English equivalent for easy assimilation.

Chinese is not a phonetic language; the pronunciation is not related to the writing of Chinese words (characters). Pinyin is a special system, created for people to learn Mandarin pronunciation. Pinyin transcribes the Chinese characters so people can pronounce them. Pinyin is the foundation of the Chinese language; it is essential and the most fundamental part for all Chinese learners. You will learn the three parts that make up the Pinyin system. Chinese is a tonal language, which implies that the tone you use when pronouncing a word can actually change the meaning of what is being said. For example, mà means scold, while mā means mother. You will learn the four tones in the Chinese language to enable you to communicate effectively. You will learn how to use the right tone for the right word.
The course will further teach you the Pinyin finals which consists of three parts: initials, finals, and tone. You will also learn the 24 finals in Chinese. You will learn the simple, compound and nasal finals. You will master them through practice and examples both in Mandarin and their English equivalent. Study how to construct compound finals by two or more simple vowels. Proceed to learn about the sixteen Pinyin whole syllables. You will also learn how to read the whole syllables with the four tones in Mandarin Chinese and discover the principles guiding the Pinyin system.
